ICC Roof Replacement & Solar Panel Project

This project will enable critical roof repair work on the ICC, as well as the replacement of solar panels.
Project Benefits
Georgetown has committed to advancing sustainability on campus by utilizing renewable energy and investing in energy efficiency. Georgetown has several buildings with rooftop solar. These include our residence hall at 55H Street NW, Byrnes/Hayden Halls, and several townhouses. Following the installation of the new solar panels at the ICC, the system will generate approximately 806 MWh of renewable energy for the campus, supplying nearly one-third of the building’s electricity. Current plans call for a 596 kW system featuring 1,001 panels that generates 806 MWh of electricity annually. Contractors will transport all removed material to an approved, specialized solar recycling location.
Construction Impacts
Beginning in early February, contractors will wrap the entire ICC in scaffolding. To maintain campus safety, the project team will set up covered entrances for community members entering and exiting the building. This work may also produce a non-hazardous odor caused by the roofing materials. Some construction noise can also be expected.
Traffic & Sidewalks
From Feb. 11 through April 2027, a project closure will block Tondorf Road to all vehicles except emergency and service vehicles. Starting at the intersection of Tondorf Road and North Road, the detour will route all traffic onto North Road. This includes the Tondorf Road entrance to Leavey garage. Vehicles should utilize West Road NW for entering and exiting Leavey garage.
There will be a skybridge over Tondorf Road (between Regents and the ICC). The sidewalk adjacent to the ICC on Tondorf Road and a portion of the sidewalk in front of Regents will be closed to pedestrians. Reroute signage will be in place.
Deliveries requiring access to Tondorf Road should be logged using the deliveries form.
Bicycle Racks
Georgetown University Police Department and the Office of Transportation Management will be tagging bicycles parked on bicycle racks at the ICC for required removal in advance of construction. If you have parked your bicycle at the ICC bike racks, please move your bike as soon as possible. Temporary bike racks have been added in Red Square and in front of Harbin Hall and are available for public use.
Tagged bicycles not moved by Feb. 12 will have their locks cut in order to enable construction at the ICC. Unclaimed bikes can be retrieved at the GUPD offices at Village C West until March 12, when they will be disposed of. Contact police@georgetown.edu if you need to retrieve a stored bike.
GUPD also offers free bicycle registration, which can help facilitate your bike’s return if stolen, allow GUPD to assist you if your key is lost, and allow them to reach you if your bike appears abandoned.
Timeline
While fencing and scaffolding will be installed beginning in early February, the actual construction work will begin later in the spring semester. The work will be ongoing until spring 2027.
Safety Information
For safety reasons, do not climb or enter the scaffolding and do not post any flyers, banners, or other materials on it. We will immediately discard any items that block or impede safety measures (see below for information about temporary designated posting locations in Red Square). The structure is an active work zone. Please do not congregate or gather under covered pedestrian walkways or near scaffolding. Thank you for your cooperation.
Flyers/Posters
We recognize the importance of Red Square for posting flyers and promoting events. There will be temporary plywood bulletin boards in place in Red Square near the ICC. Signage on the plywood will highlight temporary locations where community members can hang flyers and posters during the project. Please use only masking tape for your posters, and avoid posting directly on the scaffolding for safety reasons.
