Special Materials Recycling

The University provides collection and disposal services for electronic equipment, including CPUs, laptops, mice, keyboards, printers, and cables. University owned equipment that has a university tag or that is storing University data, MUST be cleared through UIS. To arrange pickup from your office, please submit a work order through Facilities Management. There may be a small fee for pick up, or you can deliver the items to the Regents Hall Garage and place them in the 4 wheel carts marked for electronics on the locations on the map Waste Disposal Locations.

Printer and copier toner cartridges should be returned to the manufacturer for recycling in the original packing, when available. Cartridges may be dropped off at designated location on the map Waste Disposal Locations or a pick up can be requested by submitting an online service request.

Many buildings on campus generate unwanted pallets, which are routinely collected by Recycling & Waste Management. All collected pallets are transported to the Prince George’s County composting facility for processing.

Metal items (e.g., tools, cooking utensils, furniture, toys, etc.) and scrap metal (e.g., pipes, pumps, duct work and appliances no longer containing refrigerants) must not be placed in recycling containers. The Recycling & Waste Management Departments collect scrap metal and metal products at the Entrance 4 location behind the Yates Field House or submit a pickup can be arranged by submitting an online service request.

All organic materials generated by Landscape Services are collected and composted are transported to the Prince George’s County composting facility for processing.

If you are cleaning out an office or helping remove a large number of materials (such as trash, recycling, or e-waste), please submit a request through the Facilities Service Center. This is a chargeable service, and you’ll need to provide a Work Order number for your department. We also provide 95-gallon toters and four-wheel carts to help with the process.

The University provides battery recycling boxes throughout campus where students, faculty, and staff can drop off most types of batteries (excluding lead-acid). Locations can be found on the map Waste Disposal Locations. Before depositing, cover all battery terminals with clear tape or place batteries in individual bags to prevent contact. Lead-acid batteries, as well as any batteries that are swollen, corroded, leaking, or burned, should not be placed in these bins. For proper disposal of those items, contact the Office of Environmental Health & Safety or submit a request through the Facilities Service Center.
