Basic Science Second Floor Renovation Project
Advancing Sciences at GUMC
Project Overview
After years of planning and thoughtful contributions from GUMC community members, renovations began in September 2025 at the Basic Science Building (2nd floor) on the Medical Center campus to build state-of-the art laboratories, modular open spaces, and beautiful interiors incorporating sophisticated Georgetown branding.
This webpage is designed to provide updates during the renovations, which are expected to be completed in the Fall 2026. We appreciate the community’s continued support and understanding as some aspects of construction can temporarily create disruption. We encourage you to explore this landing page for the project plan and building impacts, and contact information if any issues or concerns arise.

Construction Impacts
Construction Hours and Noise
Work Hours: 5 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Noise Impacts: The majority of noisy work will be limited to early hours from approximately 5 – 9 a.m., with minimal usage after up until 1 p.m.
Pedestrian Impacts
Pedestrian and ADA access between buildings will be maintained with modified pathways. These pathways can be found on the campus map. Measures will continue to be taken to promote pedestrian safety.
The contractor will be using main entry and exterior walkways for egress, with majority of work to be completed in early hours. Contractor will have exclusive usage of one building elevator during project duration with other elevator committed to public usage.
Recent Project Updates
Information Session
We encourage occupants of the Basic Science Building to join us via Zoom on Monday, September 15, from 2-3 p.m., for an information session with Georgetown Project Managers and contractors to share more details of the renovation project and to answer any questions. The information will be tailored to building occupants, but anyone from the community is welcome to join. A recording of the meeting will be available soon after.
