Thompson Athletic Center

This project will create a centralized training facility to support the University’s 29 varsity sports, its student athletes, coaches, and athletics staff, and to enable Georgetown University to continue to excel at the highest level of NCAA collegiate athletics. This training facility will be located east of McDonough Gym, where the current tennis courts are located and will be designed to reinforce and enhance the existing campus image and architecture. The following components are currently planned as part of this project:

  • Student Athlete Learning Center
  • Support spaces for the men’s and women’s basketball programs, including new practice courts, locker rooms, team meeting rooms, and team lounge areas
  • New weight training facility and sports medicine/training room to support all 29 varsity sports
  • New locker rooms and support areas for four other varsity sports
  • Team meeting facilities for all varsity sports
  • Coaches’ offices and support spaces for men’s and women’s basketball, and other varsity sports
  • Renovation of the McDonough Gymnasium Lobby for an integrated connection to Georgetown University Athletics’ existing and future campus facilities

This project is intended to be a hallmark development for Georgetown, providing a distinctive visual presence at the southwest corner of the campus. The design will be respectful of the character of the adjacent buildings, their scale, massing and proportions. This facility is intended to enhance students’ welfare, performance and recruitment and to improve the quality of the experience of student athletes and the Georgetown community. With the implementation of Phase I of the Athletic Facilities Master Plan, current improvements and future renovations will be in place to provide an exciting environment for Georgetown University and to allow its athletics programs to continue to perform at the highest level of NCAA sports.
