Join the Challenge: Save Energy Like a Pro with These Easy Tips

Do you ever wish you could help the planet without any hassle? Good news — it’s easier than you think! We’re stepping up our sustainability game this October with the #EnergizeGU24 EcoChallenge.

From October 1 to October 31, dive into energy-saving and participate in sustainable activities that are simple to fit into your busy life. Sign up for the EcoChallenge here, rack up points for every eco-friendly action and compete for awesome prizes. The top 10 players will score a Starbucks reusable cup and coffee voucher from Hoya Hospitality!

We’ve rounded up some super simple, yet effective ways you can reduce your carbon footprint while still having fun all while juggling those busy life responsibilities.

  1. Turn it Off: When you leave a room, remember to turn off the lights! This simple habit can make a big difference in reducing energy waste and lowering your carbon footprint.
  2. Unplug Energy Vampires!: Those chargers and gadgets you’re not using—unplug them. Even when turned off, electronics still draw power, known as vampire energy, which can account for up to 10% of your total electricity use.
  3. Go Reusable: Grab a reusable to-go box for your meals at Leo’s dining hall and don’t forget your reusable cup — whether you’re at Leo’s or anywhere on campus, it’s a simple way to reduce waste and stay eco-friendly!
  4. Master Recycling: Recycle your waste in your dorm’s trash/recycling area. Georgetown uses single-stream recycling, meaning most recyclables can go into the same bin. Easy peasy!
  5. Compost It!: Next time you eat at Leo’s, use the compost bin! Help reduce waste by composting instead of tossing everything in the trash.
  6. Green Up Your Commute: Why drive solo when you can walk, bike, hop on the GUTS or any other alternative modes of transportation? You’ll reduce carbon emissions and maybe even get a little extra exercise.

Every time you complete one of these energy-saving or sustainable actions, don’t forget to log it in the platform. If you engage in other sustainable actions that aren’t listed, you can create your own and add them too.

You can also scan the QR code to sign up.

Use your Georgetown email to create an account and track your progress on the EcoChallenge dashboard. Georgetown-specific actions are easy to find at the top of your dashboard—just check in when you complete them!
