Historic Preservation

Historic Preservation at Georgetown University

The Office of Planning & Facilities Management recognizes National Historic Preservation Month.  The National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) established Preservation Month in 1973.  The purpose is to bring awareness to and promote historic places reflecting national and community pride.  It promotes heritage tourism, educates the public about history, and shows how historic preservation can have a positive impact on communities.  During Preservation Month, numerous events, from tours and exhibits to contests and fundraisers, are sponsored by local preservation groups and state historic preservation offices.

Not only is Georgetown University the nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit university, it significantly contributes to the Georgetown historic district which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1967.  The University has a rich and fascinating history that is important to remember and share beyond its main gates.  As commencement draws near, students, soon to be alumni, will reflect on their time at Georgetown and what is has meant to them.  Whether it be memories, experiences or accomplishments, all occurred at a place they will always call home.

In 2008 the National Trust for Historic Preservation began a national campaign, This Place Matters.  The purpose of the virtual campaign is to encourage people to celebrate the places that are important to them and to their communities.  It is meant to bring attention to everyday places that are meaningful in people’s lives.  For many on campus, alumni around the world and the Georgetown community, Georgetown University is such a meaningful place -  This Place Matters.
