Friday, May 20 is National Bike to Work Day

Posted in Announcements

Dear Members of the Georgetown University Community,

This Friday, May 20, faculty and staff should expect heavy congestion and pedestrian activity on campus as we welcome the friends and families of our graduating students to campus for 2016 Commencement. In order to effectively accommodate the day’s events and provide the best experience for the families of our graduating students, we invite faculty and staff to avoid driving on this day by using alternative commuting options, such as walking, bicycling, public transit, and ridesharing. More information about your alternative commuting options to Georgetown can be found at transportation.georgetown.edu.

Friday, May 20 is also National Bike to Work Day, a day designed to celebrate bicycling as a clean, fun and healthy way to get to work. Experienced bicycle commuters from the Washington Area Bicyclist Association will lead convoys of commuters through the city and 83 pit stops will be available in the metropolitan DC region on Friday. To register for Bike to Work Day, please visit www.biketoworkmetrodc.org/.

On campus, Yates Field House will offer free breakfast to bicycle commuters on Bike to Work Day starting at 7:00am at the Yates entrance. Faculty and staff who bike to Georgetown will also be able to sign up for free access to the showers and locker rooms at Yates Field House. For those who are new to bicycling, GUWellness will be offering an on-campus “Bike Commuting 101” class this coming Wednesday (May 18) at 1:00pm. In addition, you can connect with other bicycle commuters at Georgetown on the Bicycling@Georgetown Facebook group. Georgetown is a designated “Bicycle Friendly University” and offers over 1,000 bicycle parking spaces convenient to all main campus buildings (map). To learn more about these and other bicycling resources at Georgetown, visit bicycling.georgetown.edu.

Thank you and we hope you will join us in taking advantage of National Bike to Work Day.

Sincerely,

Robin Morey, Vice President for Planning and Facilities Management
