Proactive Protection: Ongoing Enhancements to Campus Fire Suppression Systems

At Georgetown, our unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of our community drives continuous improvements across campus infrastructure. To ensure the automatic suppression of fire, thereby protecting lives and preventing the spread of any fire incident, Georgetown is diligently upgrading and expanding its existing fire suppression systems. This proactive initiative is dynamically managed, responding to the evolving needs of our facilities.

These vital enhancements range from smaller-scale replacements of individual sprinkler heads and aging sections of piping to more extensive projects. In recent years, Wolfington, ICC, and Med Dent have all received new fire pumps, significantly bolstering their suppression capabilities. New North is scheduled to receive a comprehensive system upgrade soon, and Leavey Garage, which currently has an aging sprinkler system, is also slated for a new upgrade.

Crucially, this ongoing effort also addresses buildings on campus that currently lack a dedicated fire suppression system, bringing these facilities up to our stringent safety standards. For instance, Reiss does not currently have a fire suppression system but will be receiving an entirely new one. It’s important to note that older buildings like Healy, Lauinger, White Gravenor, and Walsh were not required by code to have suppression systems when they were originally built and are currently grandfathered into existing codes. These buildings are maintained to meet different, rigorous code requirements to ensure safety in the absence of a sprinkler system.

These strategic investments underscore Georgetown’s dedication to fostering a secure environment for every member of our vibrant community, reflecting our ongoing commitment to excellence and service.
